  1. sorry for delay, but I was out of town. O2 sensor back by firewall fixed problem. Not easy to get to as one of you advised. I did it without removing anything ( other than some skin and blood on right arm! ). As always, many thanks. I'm retired and can't afford to go to dealership! This is wife's '96 with 62,000 miles, so I cretainly don't want to get rid of it.
  2. Thanks for update! I feel better now. Disconnected battery fore a while yesterday but have not had excuse to drive yet!! Will advise.
  3. Recently posted about CEL light on; PO130 and PO133 codes. Advance Auto says "Bank 1 , Sensor 1". Got answer saying this was on the rearward exhaust manifold, which I assumed was against the firewall. Replaced sensor; light still on. Today I see a post saying "Bank 1 , Sensor 1" is on the front of the engine. Just wondering which is correct; maybe different models?? Also, do I need to disconnect battery to "reset" CEL? As always, thanks!! Tom
  4. Have '96 ES300, check engine light on. Advance Auto says two codes; PO130 and PO133. Both say "Bank 1, Sensor 1". Can anyone tell me how to locate the exact sensor on engine? I replaced one sensor several years ago, but I don't have full servide manuals. Thanks, Tom
  5. Try here for a replacement. http://antennamastsrus.com/ Super web-site. Item was $40.95 total and worked perfect. "Tech" at company helped quickly with wiring question. Like replacement better than factory original since it does not have clutch that grinds at each end of travel. Must be something like end switches. Thanks for suggestion, Tom
  6. Have replaced antenna on 96 ES300 twice now. Each time, the new antenna goes up the first time fine. When I turn radio back off, the motor pulls plastic gear strap completly out of antenna mast. Seems like the clutch portion of motor assembly must be bad??? Any one have any thoughts? Is the "clutch" adjustable or should I just relpace entire assembly? If entire assembly is the answer, are certain Toyota versions a cheaper alternative? Thanks, Tom
  7. Have 96 ES300 with check engine light on. Trying to follow suggestion to use MAF cleaner. Went to Advance Auto and bought the first thing I saw; CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner. ( CRC#599C ) One of the "directions" reads as follows: DO NOT use on vehicles with a Karman-Vortex air flow sensor, e.g. Toyota Supra Turbos, Mitsubishi's and most Lexus vehicles. Any thoughts?? If this is for real, any suggestions as to a different product? Thanks, Tom
  8. Thanks! I assumed 2nd dipstick was tranny, but there is absolutly nothing in "manual" about it. Headlite comment makes sense; they are almost directly behind headlights. thanks again, Tom
  9. Have 96 ES300 with only the books that came with it. Several questions if I may: 1. Under the hood, just to each side of the radiator are ~1" diameter plastic cyliders, about 1.5" long. Outside has L on one end and R on the other. Inside the cylinder appears to be a smaller sliding cylinder with red graduations on it; with a 0 in the middle. Driver's side unit is cracked off from the base and I wonder what it is for? 2. In addition to the standard oil dip-stick, there is another dip-stick closer to the radiator. It has a label that says something like "Do not use to check differential; check fluid level at fill port per service manual". A guy at Tires Plus said this was a 2nd oil dip-stick. Nothing in factory books about this. Can anyone explain what it is for? 3. Last, I now have P0 171 error code showing up. Want to clean mass air flow sensor; can I assume this is the round item just downstream of the air filter box? Looks like intake of small jet engine? Many thanks, Tom
  10. Have 96 ES300; Trunk release button in door panel no longer opens trunk. Have read thru manual 3 times but find no "fuse" reference for this button. Anyone know what fuse feeds it? Before I pull switch out and start researching, I would like to just change a fuse if possible.Boy do I feel dumb! Had tunnel vision looking for fuse. Wife found switch inside glove box!!!!!!!!!! All is well now. Thanks, Tom
  11. All fixed!!! Sorry I posted too fast. I thought I had read a lot of previous posts before, but a little while ago I read one about checking the hoses at the bottom of the air filter box. One was off! Who knows why it was off, but all fixed now. Wish I could thank the right person, but I don't recall name. Great site; saves $. I like to do my own work, but I date back to engines that quit if you unhook anything!!
  12. Wife has 96 ES300 with 52,411 miles on it. Due to travels, it gets very little mileage. 4,348 in last 6 years; 164 in last 4 1/2 months. I keep tank fairly filled with "treated" gas, but this is just for moisture. I now have engine light on and Advanced Auto says it is PO171 , Too Lean , Bank 1. Gas cap is tight. I have read some posts on this sight with lots of suggestions. I would change fuel filter, but I can't figure out where it is! Any suggestions? I have an auto shop I trust but they want $75.00 to "test". Do their "test systems" tell more than the small unit at the car parts places? Last, if I decide to run car enough to get rid of old fuel ( 560 miles interstate trip in a few weeks ) , is this likely to cause any problems? Would it make sense to add injector cleaner during this trip? Thanks, Tom
