  1. Well I had been having some real bad groanin from my power steering pump. Went in and both the pump and high pressure hoses were bad. When we were in there we replaced the serpentine belt, and found that thetiming belt was dry rotted as well. Since we were almost at 100K we went ahead and did that too. After a full tune up my gas mileage has gotten much better. Apparently the car had all of the original plugs, wires, etc. Full cleaning of throttle body. lots of money, but im hoping that this lasts me a couple years now with no major expenses. tex
  2. Hey all- My car is making a horendous groan when turning in situations such as parking lots, turning slowly etc. I have been refilling the fluid intermittently as needed recently and the sound seemed to stop. however, now the resevoir is at the correct level and the sound is worse than ever. The steering is pretty difficult at low speeds. Furthermore I can see down on the scrape plate there is plenty of evidence of the leaking fluid as of late. Any ideas? costs im looking at? etc Thanks alot T TEX
  3. Hey there- I also drive a 1991 LS. MY car was bought in AZ and has lived out the rest of its life in Miami, FL obviously two places that require AC. I just had the problem of retrofitting to the new freon. I first had the freon replaced with a die to show the leaks. I next found myself replacing all parts including the drier, evaporater, condenser, etc to R134A. The entire job cost me 1400 at a local shop i trust. Lexus quoted me 2100 on the same job based on there hourly rate of $140/hr. Not sure your exact situation, but to change to 134A you are going to need to replace the whole system. Tex
  4. Any thoughts on this- So i recharged my ac and it blew cold for about 2 hours before the warm air returned. I went ahead and dropped off the car at the shop this morning and they told me that it is leaking from the condenser and drier. Therefore to replace all of the necessary components its going to be 1392 $ including labor, parts, tax, and 1 year warranty. This is an independent shop that I trust, and im guessing that it is going to be cheaper than a lexus dealer. I s this a normal problem for a lexus. I have had the car for about 1 year and this is the first major problem. It is a 1991 LS400 with 91000 miles on it. My grandmother bought it new back in the day and it has been driven solely in Pheonix AZ and Miami Fl so I guess the AC has had a lot of use in its 14 + years. ANy thoughts if Im getting screwed?
  5. I know this topic has been discussed at length- but im not that technically savvy, so I need some clarificiaton. I had my 1991 LS 400 retrofitted to R134A about 2 months ago when my AC started blowing hot air. They put the Ultraviolet die in and will be able to tell where the leak is once I take it back into the shop. My problem is that with work I am really short on time and cant get back to the hsop anytime soon. Being in Miami, this is a problem so I mgoing to try a DIY for the time being I bought a a can of Castrol recharge with valve, gauge, and all that good stuff. I just dont know where to hook it up. Can anyone post any pictures of where I will need to conect the valve or describe in detail. Thanks alot all.!!
  6. no pic yet, but i did just get a digital camera for the holidays. will add one soon. I love the car, and these are the first two problems ive encountered, other than clock lcd being burnt out, but dont care about that. Ihave a few options to work with. and note, im not a diy'er, trust me Anyways, i suppose i can take it to either a Lexus or Toyota dealer down here, I can take it to a place called Japanese Car Care specialists, who stated that they use all factory parts as needed and will provide a 12 month 12000 mile warranty on any work. And finally, there is a shop i have worked with down here that i used to take my nissan to and i have had good luck as they seem to be very reliable and honest. (I took my nissan to the nissan dealer and they told me i the burning smell i smelled was the clutch, and that it needed to be replaced. This shop informed me that i simply had a plastic bag sucked onto my manifold and melted. Charged me only 25$ for the pressure washing and time spent diagnosing the problem) Further more, this third option told me that they run an AC diagnostic on my car for 85$ where they feel with appropriate freon and a ultraviolet dye, which will show exactly where the leak would be, if thats the problem. How does this sound?
  7. I drive a 1991 Lexus ls 400 with about 88,000 miles on it. This car as been in my family since new and I am starting to have a few problems. First about 3 weeks ago when i returned to school in Miami I noticed that my air conditioner is having problems. First, It is only blowing hot air when on, the fan is still powerfull, but no matter what my temp set is at, it goes from warmer to hotter. I am wondering if this sounds to be more of a coolant type of deal or compressor, or what? All of the indicator lights on the settings are functioning properly if this helps. Second, soon after i noticed this, I also noticed a groan when turning my steering wheel. This ONLY happens the first time i turn on the car in the morning. For about the first 5 minutes, their is a loud groan when moving the wheel. At the same time im hearing a "high pitch whirring"noise from under the hood. When popping the hood, it is clear that the sound is coming from the cylinder marked power steering fluid. After a few minutes the noise subsides and the groanig is no longer present. This wont happen upon starting the car after clases or such, only after the car has benn sitting for 8+ hours. Any insight on these problems will be helpful. If anyone has any price guess for service at a lexus dealer let me know. Thanks for everyones help

  9. So as i posted in my last msg, i just got my new 91 LS with 80000 miles on it. I just went to get my insurance quote through progressive and was quite worried. I was going from an 89 V6 maxima with 170000 miles and only liability to a car with a significant resale value. I obviously decided to add comprehensive coverage to my basic 350,000 / 500,000 liability and am ecstatic at my quote. Im a 22 year old male and am only paying 588.00 every six months, which to me, is great. My agent just told me she had insured a mid 90's F150 for 3300 every six months, grant it, he did come from direct, which is no good. I have a clean driving record, so im happy. My insurance is only going up 300 a year, so either way, the i am so happy with my car now!!!
  10. Hey thanks for all of the replies. As far as the "silverish" color goes. I j ust gave it its first long bath in a long time. THe paint looks great and a nice shiny silver, haha. Was just covered up with a nice layer of dead bugs and dirt. I was also going through all of the paper work and it looks like the rack and pinion and steering and all of that was replaced at 65,000 miles by a lexus dealer, + new breaks, and new tires. From what ive been reading, that steering problem can be one of the major ones, but it was fixed o nly 15,000 miles ago so that should be great. All post some picks as soon as i get a chance, but im definately excited to be driving such a nice car. and what a step up
  11. So I have just inherited a silverish 1991 Lexus LS400. My grandmother left it to my father, and when my 89 maxima with 175000 miles finally got to costly to maintain, I stepped up and took the Lexus. Needless to say im extremely happy. The car is at 80,000 miles only and has had all maintenance done through lexus dealer. Any advice on taking care of the car. Its in great shape inside and out. There is no cd player so i might upgrade that but otherwise im happy. There is some minor paint chipping on the rear bumper, but the car did spend 10 years in the hot sun of Pheonix AZ. Aside from that and a very few minor dents, its untouched. I am a graduate student in Miami right now, and am wondering about tint. Any advice on what would look good. It gets so hot at school that im definately thinking of tinting it. Probably around 20% or so. I dont think 5% would look very good on the car since its silver. I had the extremmely dark tint on my charcoal nissan and it looked great, but not sure if the contrast with the new color will be good. Thanks for your time and consideration.!!!! :D
