  1. Go to www.lexls.com There are a couple tutorials there that should guide you... Take some pics and share if you can...good luck! -Bill thanks will check it out
  2. anyone got a link or can tell me how to remove my power steering pump resevoir so I can clean the screen?
  3. Im pretty sure this is the wrong spot but here goes. I have a p/t 2nd job in a parts store. today a couple came in and they had a 2002 lexus suv; im not sure which model; i was walking out the door when they got me. They said they had the oil changed and the check engine light came on along witch the traction light and another light next to the trac light in upper lft hand of dash. they took the suv to lexus and were told a hose was knocked off; which they fixed and were charged for. Yesterday they had the oil changed again and the same lights came on but the code was p1158 when i checked it. we just use an enxpensive code reader then u put the code in the computer and find out what it was. No reading came up for lexus or toyota on the code; almose all the other brands read o2 sensor bank 2 after the cat(sencsor 2) but a couple said map sensor i want sure what to tell them except to check online for the code or a forum; they said they were going to bring it to Lexus and try to add this bill with the last one and have the oil change place pay both bills; i turned the light off and it came back on along with the other 2 almost immediately; i cant see an o2 sensor setting off a traction light and the other light that was on; for my own personal ref(or if they come back) any ideas on what this could be? any help would be appreciated Thank you
  4. thats where i found them too. 187 for the pair; i dont need a dealer part just something that will get me back on the road thanks
  5. changed the inner tie rod on my 90 ls400; couldnt get it lined up because they told me 3 of 4 ball joints are bad so im gonna change all 4 I can get the lowers at the store I work at but the uppers include the control arms. very expensive part. I found them on rock auto same part same name at my store but alot cheaper on rockauto. then i found a noname brand on an auction site very very cheap. is it worth it to buy no name oem part or does someone have a cheap website I can get them from. the car is about to turn 300k miles so i dont want to drop alot of money into it. anybody ever use no name brand upper control arms? they include the ball joints and bushings. lexus wants a ridiculous amount of money for them. my parts store wants a ridiculous amount of money for them. any good websites out there?
  6. figured it out inner tie rod was about to fall off; so i changed the inner and outer tie rod on the driver sidetie rod end looked good but it was apart so i changed it. returned the ball joint because i needed the money for the tie rod. so ball joint will probably be next
  7. ls 400 296k milage; car drives great wheels are wearing evenly but ive noticed when i hit the breaks SOMETIMES the steering wheel shakes violently like a warped rotot but its not that because it dosent do it all the time when breaking. I took the caliper off and the pads and caliper looked fine on both sides. Passenger rotor when grabbed at 3 and 9 oclock dosent move Driver side rotor when grabbed at 3 and 6 oclock moves in and out along with the outer tie rod and inner tie rod; may be an 1/8 of an inch. What im not sure of is the passenger side dosent move so Im thinking something is wrong; Buddy of mine said change outer tie rod and being im gonna be in there do the lower ball joint as there was alot of grease comeing out of it What do you think?
  8. 1990 ls 400 296k; it was garaged for 4 yrs then I got it with 255k on it.
  9. where is the power steering pump filter located is it in line or is it a small cannister like the fuel filter?
  10. i cant get past the first part because there is no movement in the fluid to cause bubbles; where is the filter located? inline? 90 ls400
  11. my 1990 LS400 sat in a garage for 4 yrs b4 it was given to me. Front brake hoses dry rotted so i replaced one one yr and the other one went so I replaced it to; besides the white wire electrical problem i ve given up on I have a power steering pump question. The car had 255K on it when i got it; now its at 291k. power steering worked great but started to leak from the short hose on passenger side. I went to change it and it fell apart in my hand; Once I changed it the the longer one going to the driver side started to leak (power steering still worked great)i changed it and the old one fell apart in my hand. now i have no leaks and no power steering; when u look in the pump while car is running there is no movement in the fluid. I have a P/t job at an auto parts store when I look up the pump it says there is a filter in the resevoir that should be changed. i bought the 1990 LS repair (shop) manual and there is nothing in it about a filter; Im thinking if there is a filter when these lines failed garbage clogged up the filter. Where is the filter? is there a power steering filter? or is my pump shot? Thanks for any info
  12. trying to get my tire off today to do brakes and the guts of my lug nut key broke; im sure this was due to the fact that the last idiots that put my tires on used an impact wrench. I need to get the security lug off is this an item I can get at a lexus dealer for a 90 ls400? My rims are stock I dont know why they put a Lock on it anyway. If i can get the new key i might change all my lug nuts to regular nonsecurity. Are stock ls400 rims a hot item? if they r then I wont waste the money on the new lugnuts just buy the key
  13. the people were going to donate the car and no one showed up to pick it up so it was given to me and you are right no complaining here just trying to fix it. ive done alot to it and bring it back to our friends so they can see. mostly body work but the lady tears up when she sees it; they are great people and love that I am driving thier baby around. This forum has helped me alot with problems and someone sent me a lnk on how to change the plug wires nd distributor caps' all in color and step by step instructions. Big Big help. I also bought the 2 volume shop manuel off of ebay for about 12 18 bucks also a big help. I work at auto zone part time so I will test the alternator when i get back home after the holidays. then i will get back to you. Thanks for the help and Merry Christmas
  14. nah the alternator was replaced before the p/s leaks. so it is possible the p/s fluid leaked on the alternator. But if I remember correctly the car was doing some of the dimming of the lights before the leak started; but it may have been leaking very small to where I dint know because of the splash guard underneath. Im sorry i know too many variables. The car sat for 4 yrs in a gfarage with fluids(and gas) in it before it was given to me; they said it got unreliable. and had a mind of its own. I think they were talking about the elctrical poroblems lol. They were the type to bring it to the dealer when it needed air in the tires; i cant afford that so Im the type ti DIY.
  15. i have been having issues with the p/s pump. These problems started before the fluid leak. but being you mentioned it; this car sat for 4 yrs in a garage never started; when it was givin to me i had to replace a rotted brake line; then a yr and a half the other front brake line. My P/s started leaking from the little rubber hose coming off the pump and clamped onto a metal line. when replaced the old line fell apart in my hands. Then the next day I had a huge leak on the drivers side again a rubber hose clamped to a metal line which when replaced fell aprt in my hands.. nOW both leaks fixed i have no power steering at low speeds(which is how i make most of my sharp turns). Is there a filter I should check? the power steering was working great up until and during the leaking period. The hoses arent kinked. Any idea on that one? Back to the electrical; I topped off the brake fluid resevoir and didnt have any of the lights cutting out but stiull dimming; i want to just cut a long piece of the white wire out and splice in a new one
  16. i was told on here about the white wire. I dont see a break in it unless it is broke inside the insulation. My lights dim when I hit the brakes; My fan slows down and speeds up as I accelerate or decelerate. Today when i hit the brakes; the radio cut off the dash went black and the rear view mirrow dimmed; seems like i lost electrical. My fluid is alittle low Im gonna fill it and see if that stops it(brake fluid) but if it does thats a heck of a way to let you know your brake fluid is low. Im afraid this car is gonna get me stranded. My alternator is new; connections are tight and free of corrosion. Battery is a few months old and has alot of cca; its a duralst gold. autozone dont have the best parts but I like the batteries. I got a power steering question but one thing at a time Thanks Oh yea the car dosent die when this happens and the outage is for a blink of an eye
  17. there r no stupid questions just stupid people and i am one of them. Thank you for the help; i have so many bigger problems with this car I figured the trunk had something to do with them i m the only one that drives the car so it was me that pushed it in. Thanks for the help. now i will post a tougher question I hope you can help me there too.
  18. i only got one key from the people who gave the car to me where would the button be? the key i have opens the doors trunk and starts the car and opens the glove box if that helps. i think that is the master key but im not sure. I have read about the valet key but i dont think i have it.
  19. my trunk switch stopped popping my trunk. trunk will open with the key but i was wondering why the switch dosent work anymore. I pulled it a few times and dont want it to pop open when going down the road. I have some power steering questions too; but ill get into that later.
  20. my 90 ls 400 hit the 277k mark; although it was garaged for 4 yrs; i believe that is worse than 4 yrs of driving; i think the owner had everything done at a lexus dealer; sticker on timing belt cover says to change it at 110k; i guess they didnt bring it back in and i havent done it yet; im gonna do the wires plugs caps and rotors soon; I have a small exhaust leak but havent gotten it fixwed yet because i might need 2 catalyitic converters; it wont pass emissions and i dont think its the egr we cleaned that out(gunked up pretty bad) egr modulater has clogged filter in it but i just blow it off; small antifreeze leak even after changing the oring on the senseor; and the infamous white wire problem has yet to be fixed; other than that just the same problems everyone else has(radio lights etc..)great car I heard they can go 450k; after reading these vents Im waiting to see mine with that on the odometer. I heard it was the toyota version of the mercedes benz; donk care much for onr of those just want my ls Peace....
  21. You should quit your job. Your employer provides you the income to live your life. You don't seem very grateful. As for generic comments that basically state "made in china"=bad, "made in china"=poor quality then you are highly mis informed. Sure there are some questionable items that come out of china but most items manufactured today have components and assemblies coming from China. It is the largest manufacturing country in the world. Take a look at the label on virtually every consumer electronics item you own. 90% are made in China. you should see the the returns we get; no they dont provide for me; I work there p/t untill i get a to work at a real parts store. But Ill tell you rhis Duralast batteries are #1 on consumer reports although Id rather have an interstae or a diehard. but I gotta shop where i get the discount
  22. i work for autozone and everything we sell is made in china; in about 10 yrs when u walk in the door it will look like a walmart; dont come to us for parts; they should be ashamed to call them selves an autoparts store; we do sell alot of hard parts but i think that will change and all they will sell is overpriced oil and filters along with a few tools and alot of carwash/wax and tireshine (usual diy detailing) But I will say we have the greatest return policy and gaurentees in the industry. lifetime breaks are great; wear them and and you get new brakes; as for the alternators water pumps starters and everything else that has a lifetime warrenty; i look at it like this; I heard the starte on my 90 ls400 is under the intake manifold; do i really want to tear all that apart put in a made in china starter that goes bad in 2 yrs and hey yea grat i get a free starter but hey yeah i got to tear into that motor again to replace the starter. That being said I shop there because of the warrenties and the employee discount; Ive never heard of any one bring back a timing belt; but i believe you 100% Sorry for your troubles but you know what they say...payless get less
  23. my 1990 ls400 w/ 277k miles on it seems to have a hum in it when i come to a light; if i put it in neutral it sounds fine; ive drained the tranny fluid but was wondering if i need to change the filter in the transmission pan or check the fluid in my rear end differential. On another note my automatic shifter seems to be getting some play in it lft to right; is this a simple nut i can tighten up or dont worry about it?
  24. i bought a set of wires for my 90 ls400 and they are 5 mm. Is this OE? 5 mm seems thin to me.
  25. 1990 ls400; lights dim when u hit the brakes turn on fan; looked at the white wire everyone talks about on the driver side hinge in the trunk; i cant find any cracks; BUT.. today I added brake fluid to the res. because It was low; and i need to change the brakes. Drove the car up the road and when i hit the brakes the dash lights went out my radio popped and the antilock brake light came on; 1 -2 secs. car kept driving and it did it again the next brake pedal hit; I pulled over and looked at the res.. the cap has wires going to it for the level sensor in the res. and they look flimsy; going to a flimsy connector with more flimsy wires; anyone ever had any problems with this ? I moved the wires around and it hasn't happened again Im thinking broken wire in the coolant level sensor wires????
