Radio is fine and also the LED display is fine, it is just the back lighting for the LED and knobs/dials that can not be seen when lights or on. Is there a fix for this or does the radio unit itself need to be replaced?

There are several companies that can replace the bulbs including this one that repaired my LS radio last year: http://www.carstereohelp.com/lexus.htm I don't think they repair Nakamichi radios anymore though if yours happens to be one.

A few people have disassembled their radios and soldered in new bulbs. At least one person said he bought replacement bulbs at Radio Shack. Here is a thread on ClubLexus on replacing radio bulbs on an ES: http://www.clublexus.com/forums/es300-and-...-backlight.html

There are frequently used radios on eBay.

ebay seller "factoryradios" in Colton California sells used Lexus radios and I think he repairs them too. He also adds an aux-in RCA jack to the back or front of Lexus radios for a nominal price. Here is a thread where I posted information: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...l=factoryradios

i have the same problem on a 95 i just bought. nothing lights up but everything works. anybody have any ideas. thats a bit strange isnt it?

I doubt all the bulbs would go bad at once. also the display backlight still works when the main light switch is off...
