98 LS400 delayed response

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, been a long while since I have posted on here.

Recently pulled the trans pan from my 98 LS400, changed the fluid out (it was really dark and smelled awful, not sure when the last time it was changed was) and read up on the fix for p0763 shift solenoid c. I fixed that issue and the code is no longer there after cleaning the trans and putting all new T-IV fluid in. No leaks from what I have determined thus far. I made sure that it was filled up to cool after cycling P - L both ways. I even went ahead and d/c the battery to clear the ECU. I was receiving error codes p0420 and p0430 as well, but they seem to come and go. Now that 0763 is taken care of, the trans runs incredibly smooth and performs better than it has since I have owned it. However, upon starting up and going from P to R or D, sometimes it takes 2-3 seconds for the car to automatically go forwards or backwards. And in some cases, I have to give it gas up to 1200 RPM just to get it to finally move. Any ideas?

that is not normal.. it has a problem mine is "right now"

Generally mine would be too. It's not consistent right now, though. Sometimes if I pop it into D or R it immediately goes. It's sporadic. I haven't been able to drive it a whole lot since I did the fluid, perhaps driving it will resolve it?

I had the chance to start it up today and check it out some. Let it sit for a few minutes, same response. I noticed I have a very tiny leak coming from my trans pan. But could this be the culprit? If so I suppose that makes the real culprit for not sealing the trans pan better.

Here is a video of what is going on

It could be the fluid is low, it could be there is an oring for the screen that is not sealing. A leak will at a point cause the fluid to be too low. It could be a tc drain back valve is leaking, because of clean fluid. I am more with the low fluid and or sucking some air O ring deal.

Fluid at operating temp, level car, and engine running at idle in park to check the fluid level.

Pretty set on low fluid level. Found a leak for sure, going to redo the trans pan but this time with a gasket.

I went thru the same thing Jon. 1998 LS400 and leaking pan gasket. Then it would not go into gear for a few seconds.

Short story, it was low on fluid by about 1/2 quart.

Thank you, I may very well have bent it, I had to use a prybar because it would not come off. I will check it out, I may just reseal it with some permatex.

I need help diagnosing what the actual culprit of the p0420 that threw up few days ago. I ran my torgue scan tool and I am adding screenshots for better understand.
I am not able to understand the various test. I need some help here.
Pic1 is the mod 6 test, pic2 is the freeze frame of the cel, pic 3 is the wave form of 02 sensor bank1 sensor 2 and the last 2 pictures are the waveform of the a/f sensors.

This morning both by check engine and VSC lights came on. I took the car to Autozone and the tester said that P0420 code appeared twice.
He sold me a bottle of Cataclean and told me to try that first.
Any chance that will work? Should I reset the lights after using Cataclean or should it go off on its own? How do I reset the lights (remove power to the battery for a few hours or is there an easier way)?
Am I safe driving the car around in the meantime?
Any other suggestions? Anything else it could be or is that code pretty definitive as to what the issue is?
      Thanks in advance!

I have a 2000 es300 and it started bucking badly and check engine light with codes p0753, p0758, and p1760. I don't see how all 3 solenoids could have gone bad at the same time, ive checked the wiring going to the trans and no problem found, is this a sign the trans is going bad, or maybe just an electrical issue

      good evening lexus owners,

      Lexus Gs430. [90500mi] - clean title - clean carfax.

my check engine light is on and the Yellow indicator with exclamation mark also on (Brake System Warning Light (yellow) and the TRAC light is also on (suggesting that traction is OFF) --> all 3 of these are related to the code: P0430

aside from that the Tire Pressure light is also blinking at me constantly.
aside from that the Check VSC is also displaying.
aside from that the RED traingle exclamation light also blinks (slowly - sometimes stays on - sometimes doesn't)
aside from that the AFS OFF light is also constantly blinking

I drove a car home after the previous owners mechanic cleared the CEL
The check engine light and the TRAC light and the light beside Check engine were all gone until about 90-100miles of driving. Then all 3 returned together.
IF my issue was a bad Catalytic converter(s) / leak(s) in exhaust / bad O2 sensor(s) - which one of these is most likely to be ruled out since the CEL didn't come back (after clearing) until over an hour of driving / city and highway...

which issue do I ignore and which do I address?
The only code the car has given out is:
P0430 Lexus - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

I noticed the car is fine while driving.
I noticed the cruising range it gave me is actually exceeding the cruising range by a few miles.
But now that the check engine light is on again, maybe my gas mileage will take a hit. yes IT DID

So I checked the GAS CAP as most people keep saying all over the forums for the check VSC.
My Gas cap and the ring around it both seem to be okay.
But you never know, maybe this could be an issue.

Which of the lights can I fix via DIY or Indy shop?
Which light has to be taken the LEXUS . toyota to fix / reprogram. don't normal shops have these computers to reprogram stuff?

thanks in advance for any replies and guidance.

The lexus dealership that maintained the car (while under warranty) said if you aren't the same owner who owned it when the work was done, then you can't find out jack from them.

      No open recalls (confirmed)
i feel helpless with the light show going on on my dashboard.. all different colors of lights flashing.. red.. yellow.. amber.. orange.. -__-
should I try removing power to the battery to reset ECU?
or try removing a fuse or two?

I haven't done anything as of yet.
started googling and joined up here.
