ghallam
my father-in-law has a '99 ES300 -- the steering wheel started squeaking about a year ago. any idea what the cause or solution ? steering wheel functions perfectly other than squeak. the squeaking noise sounds like it is happening in the steering column. :) thanks, geoff
chadmg7
Is the steering wheel squeaking inside the cabin or does it sound like it is coming from the front axle or front of the car? When I back out of my driveway or out of a parking spot, I sometimes hear a creaking noise when I turn the wheel, but it is coming from up near the actual tires, or from deep into the steering column. (I have a 97 ES, so the same generation as your father-in-law's) I also know that the strut mounts wear out more quickly than they should, so maybe that has something to do with the creaking noise that you experience with the steering wheel? I am not 100% sure.
monarch
The steering wheel has to come off and certain parts of the horn assembly lubed to eliminate the squeak.
ghallam
thanks for the responses! new question: steering column disassembly-- is it simple to attempt yourself? what type of lubrication for horn assembly? WD-40? thanks, geoff
monarch
Too complicated and dangerous for the do-it-yourselfer
byohzrd
I just had this very problem fixed on Friday. They lubed something in the steering column... $45 at the dealership. It was worth it, in my opinion.
