GuyTelefunken
Mark Levinson wasn't available in the 1998, Nakamichi was. It's no easy task to replace the standard Pioneer with a Nakamichi. The amps, wiring, and speakers are also different.
philip frank
are you saying that the stock stero in a 98 gs is made by pioneer?
GuyTelefunken
Absolutely, 100% yes, as are the speakers and amp as well. I just ordered a replacement LCD display for my '98 radio directly from Pioneer. They are quite easy to deal with concerning parts. Click here for Pioneer Parts I'm not sure of the manufacturer of the navigation system, but I would assume it is also Pioneer. If you pull your radio, it says Pioneer right on it along with the part number of the radio.
philip frank
is the amp built into the radio or is it a seperate component? also, what are the wattage specs and what can the stock speakers handle on the stock 98gs stero?
HotBlue400
so than the best thing for me would be to just add an amp and sub, and maybe replace some of the factory speakers with aftermarket?
GuyTelefunken
Amp is seperate, under the dash. Amp is rated 215W max. Individual speakers are 2 ohm (front) and 4 ohm (rear), wattage unknown. Good luck finding matching aftermarket speakers with the proper impedance for both the front and rear locations. Am I the only one who thinks that the factory system sounds pretty good (7-8 out of 10 IMHO) for a factory system? Albeit, it could use a little stronger low-end. I guess it depends on what you're listening to and who you're trying to impress. B)
