I bought a used 98 GS 300 recently and I was thinking of installing HID lights in it. It came with stock (halogen?) lights. Personally I dont know anything about lighting and I was wondering how do I get started and how much should I expect to pay.

It would be also nice if you guys can suggest some good lightbulbs.

Many thanks

Start with these. Wal-Mart now sells the new Silverstar High Performance Halogen (bright white), model number 9006ST (low beam) and 9005ST (high beam), cost is $37.00/pair.

After that, lots of options.

Depends on how much you want to spend. You can start with the white halogen bulbs but those are NOT HIDs. You can then go to a HID kit which will fit into your 9006 housing ($400 or so). You can buy and install the Lexus OEM HID (housing/bulb/ballast) but you will have to skip the leveling computer part of the OEM system. Lots of problems=$$$$$ to do that. The first part is more manageable, just some wire splicing. ($300 - $400 used on eBay, less if you are patient/lucky)

Then lastly, you can get a full HID projector retrofit. This is pretty expensive though. (about $1k)

Like I said, depends on how much you want to spend.
