People Have No Respect

I just picked up my certified 07 LS 460 2 weeks ago. Pearl with tan interior. Loaded out. Showroom CLEAN. I parked it for 15 minutes, came out and some moron hit the passenger door leaving enough black rubber to make a spare tire. The dent was deep enough to make my chest tighten up. It amazes me that someone would hit a car with paper tags still on it and take off without leaving a note. This planet's inhabitants really need to reassess what is right and wrong. So much for enjoying the new ride.

Bummer.

One word: "defensive parking". I've turned it into an art form and haven't gotten a door ding since Winter 1978.

Say your not one who takes up two spaces to protect their doors from dings? LOL....give me some "Defensive Parking" pointers.

Best defensive driving pointers... TAKE THE WIFE'S CAR! :D

Rob bud it sucks...People don't even respect their own stuff! I always park as far away as I can. But what p isses me off now is lazy people with nice cars. Because they park that far away to and then the leave their cart sitting next to my car.

Bummer, Not your fault! Even when you defensive park a moron can find you. I parked my 2007 GX at the Borgata Casino 4-rows from all the parked cars by itself, I came out 4-hours later and a moron parked a old Chevy blazer right next to me and opened the side rear door right into my rear fender flare. I could see the black plastic underneath and the titanium silver paint was peeled and raised off as I walked up. This is my only ding on a perfect garage kept GX470 I touched it up and it still looks terrible. I got a quote from an auto body shop they quoted $1,700.00 they would have to paint the door and flare and buff the whole side to match the silver paint. Good luck cleaning yours up, I feel your pain.

No, I never take up two spaces. Back in 1976 I bought a monthly parking pass to a multilevel parking garage in downtown Kansas City near a bank where I was a computer programmer. The spaces were not assigned and there were supposed to be enough parking spaces for all people who had monthly passes plus the limited number of passes sold daily. One day when I arrived for work late I found that there were no more parking spaces and a Datsun 240/260Z was straddling two spaces. That was my space! I won't go into detail about what "happened" to that Datsun but my guess is that the Datsun owner's radio reception was likely poor on his way home.

The key to defensive parking is to look for an especially large end space where no one can park on the right of me and to hug the right side of the space. 83.3% of all cars (I made that up) carry only a driver and the passenger door likely will not be opened when someone parks his car next (to the left) of mine.

My second choice of parking spaces is a parallel parking space on the street at either front or the back of a block ... i.e. either no one parking in front of me or no one parking behind me. Again I hug the front or back of the space. Or I look for an exceptionally large parallel parking space where people might park in front and behind me. Damn that Smart Car that still squeezed in and shared my space one time.

If I'm going to parallel park, I prefer to park where someone can park only behind me since I know I'm going to get my rear bumper cover replaced or repainted on a regular basis due to people slamming into the rear bumper while they are playing with their electronic gadgets.

If all else fails and I can't find my perfect parking space, I'll park whatever distance away from my destination that it takes to minimize the risk of dings.

I rarely have a problem finding a perfect or nearly perfect space, it rarely takes more than an extra minute or three and I sometimes get an exercise bonus if I have to park far away from my destination. My wife has gotten used to me dropping her off in front of restaurants and stores and then zooming off to find an acceptable parking space.

And per LEXIRX330's method, if we are going somewhere where I know there will be no defensive parking spaces, we TAKE THE WIFE'S CAR! She parks her car using the "Braille method" and she isn't going to notice anther scratch or dozen.

I feel your pain, just got another door ding today actually. Nice white paint transfer and a scratch that won't buff out.

We need cameras on our cars!

I love it!! You always crack me up. LOL!! Do you suppose that guy in the Datsun ever figured out his reception problem?

I have been very lucky, knock on wood; It's been ten months since I took delivery and no dings so far. I refuse to park within half a block of those cart returns in parking lots, and I never park next to a truck or SUV where the doors are high enough to take out your side mirrors. When it comes to parking I use the old saying from the X-Files, Trust No One!

The think that kills me is that I had a 98 GS400 since 98 and there was not a single door ding. I am going to incorporate my new parking mentor's best practices. I feel better knowing I am not the only one driving around with Limp Bizkit blasting on my Mark Levinson system. It brings back the primordial part of mankind. I would never go up to the nicest stick in the cave and smash into it and run. Didn't people stop that crap after you couldn't make crank phone calls.

Thanks again for my automotive moments of Zen. You are all a great bunch of Lexus Owners

Wow that sucks. I would be seeing red. I have a 95 Ls400 in immaculate condition that took me a year to find. I'd go postal if that was me..

Your showing your age.....!!! How many college kids know what "Postal" means?

I start scoping out the perfect spot as soon as I pull into a parking lot. I park waaaaaay far away from the masses and make sure I'm uphill so no buggys can roll into me. I got one ding in my Infiniti and that happened up here at work...I started parking somewhere else. Other than that, I can't remember the last time I have had a door ding.

Like I always say...my car does not play well with others. ;)
