Ok, little woman and I went and drove the RX400H this evening, it is a 2007 with 53k miles with Nav, backup camera, Mark Levinson sound, 18 inch wheels, AWD, heated seats, hids, rain sensor wipers.etc.

The Car was a two owner car, original from Burbank CA. and up to 42k miles with all service in system except from 26k to 42k miles...???? The second owner bought the car in April 2010 and it was kept only 9 months until Jan 2011. The car has been sitting on the lot for a month. Asking price has been dropped from $32998 to 31998 this week. The Car is immaculate, has Goodyear tires (not sure about these)

and no apparent leaks anywhere. The battery is unknown as for replacement (12v) but may have been done in April of 2010. The Car is silver. What are your thoughts, and what would be a good offer price.?? Salesman said ipod interface could be added to the Satellite radio selection for $300 is this possible?

Based upon what I've seen in Autotrader, that is a decent price and in many cases, is lower than similar models' dealership pricing.(for northern California).

In the 6 years we have owner our RX400h, we have not had any issues with it. It is truly the most reliable vehicle we have ever owned (by a long shot).

Thankyou for your comment, The dealership looked like they were really hurting sales wise, no customers, Could this be a time for me to offer $28000 and see what happens..????Or negotiate price along with some future service like the 60k service?? Any thoughts...I have seen the same RX400's on their lot for over two months...I believe our local economy is being very cautious.....

I'd be awfully suspicious of a 2007 car that has already had 2 owners and which has a big hole in its maintenance history. Gosh, this car would bring soooo much less here in the midwest.

Yes, an iPod interface can be added for $300 or less -- prices on eBay for the lowest function/price VAIS iPod interface seem to run from $225 to $250. It's probably something you could do yourself if you don't want to take the chance of a dealer !Removed! something up during the installation. Attached are the Lexus iPod interface install instructions for the European RX400h but it's likely about or exactly the same for U.S. models.

Offer $28,000? Hell, write a check for $20,000, show it to the dealer and see what he says. That's a quick way to get a car salesman's attention and fun too.

Thank you...Yea $28000 plus give me $5000 for my RX300 and I would pay for tax and license with cash, and finance $23000.... The cars only issues was moisture behind the right headlamp assembly, which they said they would fix, and a loose rear view mirror...which they also said they would fix. It is a CPO car with the warranty to 100k miles...or 3 years...

No offense, but if I were selling my car and someone showed me a check for 60% of my asking price, I'd tell them all negotiations are hereby canceled. Then I'd have Uncle Guido's goons escort the person off my property.

Seriously, it is very unlikely that any dealership is so hurting for money that they'd accept such a low-ball offer.

However, it doesn't hurt to offer them less that what they are asking with the understanding that they may counter-off IF your offer is not an insult.

Also no offense meant but as someone who spent 31 years around the auto industry, I can assure you that it is impossible to insult an auto salesman or dealer owner with a low-ball offer. That doesn't mean they aren't going to put on an act of being offended to try to hook you in. Dealer salesman play lots of games, I know them all and I love that a friend calls me "a salesman's nightmare".

Actually, if the dealer bought the car at auction or took it in on trade he may have no more than $20,000 in it. The broker who bought my still beautiful 2000 LS400 (retail $61,000+) at auction when it came off a 3 year/36,000 mile lease back in 2003 paid barely $25,000 for it. The broker did me a favor and I gave him a nice profit ... but I didn't make him rich.

Well offered $28000, they didnt like the offer, Went thru the usual, I offered $29000, but held firm...They have called twice last offer was for $30500 from them excluding tax etc. I Confirmed my offer of $29k excluding tax and license...So far no go...If it wasnt meant it wasnt meant. Tomorrow is another day. Love their tactics, well it is a CPO car, and the interest rate for finance is 2.9 percent. I said that is fine, but if they didnt like the terms than I would gladly give my Credit UNion the business as I am sure they would like to earn the 3.9 percent interest....so it goes, doesnt look good for my end of the court...As for the trade in price I was giving them a low ball price... The condition of my RX300 is close to excellent, but I gave them a low price for the trade in...I figure at most they paid $26.5k for the RX400H...So my offer of $2900 isnt bad... I am not frustrated though, its just a car.... <_<

Certified Lexus rates just dropped to .9% Maybe ask for the service records. The dealer may have had high reconditioning costs to bring the car up to sale standards, especially being certified. The RO on my Lexus was close to $2100--includes the certification inspection, changing fluids, replacing brake actutator (scan codes), paint reconditioning and full detailing. My RX did not come with the addl expense of the Certified warranty since the milage threshold was just over Lexus's limits. This does affect their wiggle room.

That seems like a LOT of $$$!

May of '09 we got the 08 Rx400h with 42k miles for $31,000. Has the same equipment.

So, now in 2011 you should be able to get a 2010 Rx400h (which doesn't even exist) for $31 with the same mileage. Here in RI (recently named 49/50 worst states to live in economically) you can get an 08 for a little less.

I'd keep looking- $30k for a 2007 now in 2011 seems like WAY too much.

The average asking price by private seller in Lenore's neck of the woods is in the 30K range. Saying the asking price or her offer is way too high is like telling someone who lives in Beverly Hills that a 1600 sq ft house for $700,000 is way too much. It IS is you live in San Diego, but not Beverly Hills.

This is why it is important to know the area and the "going" prices in that area.

A car is not real estate. A car is a depreciating movable asset. "Location, location, location" does not apply to a car like it does to real estate. There is a minor variation of values depending on the part of the country but the differences are usually no more than the transportation costs of moving vehicles from one location to another.

Posted

I bring up location because what people can afford to pay plays affects what the selling price is of the vehicle. You can find more bargains where the average income is lower. This applies to all types of merchandise and services, not just vehicles.

Yes, large, almost completely deserted, nearly new California housing developments where people have paid far more than the actual value of real estate have become legendary.

I've even heard that Californians -- CHILDREN, COVER YOUR EARS! -- are even willing to pay RETAIL!

Agreed, way to high...YOu are the first to know, We drove a hour 15 minutes to a Carmax (yea i know) and we just saved $5000 for a RX400h which is a 2008. one year newer than what is offered at the Lexus CPO dealership....They just would not deal...Told them on my last call that I was driving to Carmax to look at a cheaper RX which was newer...Equipment was identical except the the Hid's which are fixed....Sorry Lexus, you lost my business. May I say the purchase was very pleasant, and they too gave us free coffee...and a full tank of gas...and offered a warranty which I have to decide on... :chairshot: :) :) :) So We are now a hybrid driver....

Congrats!! Looks clean!!

There was an 06 400H for sale here in my area, I believe 62k on the clock for about $24k. Same options as yours, just gold with ivory interior.

Posted

THAT IS NOT A GOOD PRICE, i SAW SEVERAL 06 400H FOR AROUND $21K TO $23k...PRETTY CHEAP FOR A HYBRID...

Posted

You know, I feel like i stole it....the car is an absolute pleasure, getting used to the feel of the hybrid, but it is definetly smoother and quieter than the RX300 that we used to own...Features, by far this car is tops. the visability on the rear quarters is much worse, but the camera does help when backing up. If we defeat the system we might be able to turn camera on whenever....Wife loves it, but she has a lead foot so trying to get past 23mpg is real difficult...and she does most of the driving and we have crappy formulated gas in California...
