Phone Screen Does Not Display When Making Call

Whether I am using my BlackBerry or iPhone 4 (both are programmed to pair with the system - and I am in a 2008 RX350) the Nav system display screen sometimes does not switch to show the phone screen (for volume, etc.). There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why this happend sometimes and not on others when all conditions are seemingly the saem.

ANy thoughts/suggestions?
