Broken Key / Can't Start

Hey guys, I hope you can help me.

I tried to start the my Lexus RX300 this morning and broke the key, while doing it.

As you know, this master key is made of two parts, metal and plastic part, so I've ended up with two pieces in my hand.

Anyhow, I tried to start the car using just the metal part (and pliers to hold it) and car won't start.

I am not sure if the plastic part has some chip in it or not, so the car will not start when these two are disconnected.

Or my car actually broke and that's the reason I can't start it. (POSSIBLE, but that'd be a bad coincidence)

Can someone tell me what to do and how to start the car?

You dont have a spare or valet key.? Yes the electronic are in the plastic piece....maybe hold it (plastic piece near steering column while trying other part of key.

That's a good suggestion, I wasn't sure, but it would definitely make sense.

I'll let you know if it didn't work.

It will definitely start just by holding the plastic part of the key (which has a removable chip in it) next to the column. Hold it in close proximity to the metal part of the key. Shouldn't need it to run, just to start.

You can actually take the chip out of the old key and put it in the new key and you won't have to program it, if you have trouble programing.

Keys breaking are pretty common with Lexus keys -- the dealer charges a mint. Ours asked for $142 for each key. I went on eBay and found a guy who sells the keys for under $10. You pop in the electronic component, take it to a locksmith who does laser cutting, and they charge you $15. Done.
