What Are "pop Up Messages" On The Nav System?

Greetings,

I've migrated from a 2004 LS430 to a LS600hL and in the setup section of the Menu screen, the third (last page) has an option to turn on or off "pop up messages'. I've turned it off and turned it on, but don't see the difference. I believe that the nav system on the LS600 is the same as the LS460.

The DVd and books that came with the car don't give any examples of what this does

Anybody here figured it out?
