I have a 2002 Lexus GS300 with the 2001 GSP CD. Can I use any 2008 disk or do I need one that is specific for my model year system?

you cant use ANY 2008 disc but you can use a GEN 2/3 8.1 disc which would be the newest update for you! i just sold a GEN 2/3 7.1 disc which is the 2007 update disc. im gonna update to a gen 4 nav with the 8.1 update disc (well i will, thanks to DCfish, i will have it by either end of this month or first if april)
