1998 Es300 Intermittent Starting Problem

100K mileage...3 mo's ago, when attempting starting, there is a single 'click', dash lights, all electrical, etc go on but the engine doesn't turn over & no other noises.Multiple attempts eventually start the car, usually after wiggling the key in the starter switch. Usually the problem occurs after sitting all night but not always.Once started, there are no problems for days to weeks. Checked out OK times 2 by certified mechanics.

I noted that an 'emergency entry key' I had made (no transponder) elicits the same pattern as when the car won't start (w/ a transponder key).

So, is it the switch, a transponder system problem, failing relay w/ the starter, etc?

help!

How old is you battery? I had the same problem the a few days after I bought my car, thought it was something serious. Changed the battery and it was fine. I know it sounds simple, but when it happened to me I had a mechanic look do work to the car the same day he even changed the battery terminals. If your car has been sitting all night and it being winter the battery would be having difficulty starting the car.

Sounds to me like starter solenoid contacts, they are easily replaceable once you remove the starter, or you can just get a reman starter. Symptoms are usually one or two clicks and then after repeated trys will finally start. Usually worse in cold weather. If you just replace the contacts shouldn't cost more than $20 and some of your time.

Did you ever find the solution to your problem, if so, what was the fix? I have a 1995 ES 300 with 38K miles, really, and it has the exact same symptoms?

subydude999--it is probably your starter. To be sure, next time it doesn't start, get someone to move the key in the ignition to START and hold it there while you gently tap on the starter.

I had the exact same problem on my 02 ES a couple of weeks ago. I got a remanufactured starter with a lifetime warranty on it. Cost of replacing the starter: $140 + 2 hours of my time. Satisfaction of knowing my car will start every time I turn the key: priceless
