briansthomas Posted January 15, 2009 Share Posted January 15, 2009 i found a 1993 ls400 with 129k miles. the car was garaged kept by the original owner and was in really great condition - exterior and interior almost perfect. the engine ran perfect and didnt burn a drip of oil. it was a really nice car. new tires, recent timing belt. all original owner receipts etc. a real cream puff the car started and ran extremely well except it died once. before it cut out the tachometer registered over 7000 rpm in spite of the fact it could not have been even close to that.. i pulled over and restarted it and it ran fine for 40 minutes. i was not able to make it stall again. the seller was aware of the issue although played stupid. he was asking $4k for the car and i offered him $2k considering the problem. he took my $2k offer and i figured with any luck i can fix it. the seller told me sometimes the odometer craps out when it happens and shows zero mph. my first guess is the ecu computer or maybe one of the connections. there are no check engine lights on. does anyone have any insight into the cause of this problem? thx in advance. 93ls400walt Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 The Tach not working on occasion is very common. But I have not read about anyone having the needle showing a false high RPM. There is a prob with the wire harness that runs through the driver side trunk hinge. Causing various weird elect. probs and even trans. shifting probs. pull the black trim piece from the trunk hinge and unwrap the tape and loosen the fasteners that hold the wire harness past the sharp "U" turn of the wires and check for broken or stretched/damaged wires. Do this with the battery disconnected and splice in new wire for any questionable areas. need more info? do a forum search and look at www.lexls.com also Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
briansthomas Posted January 19, 2009 Author Share Posted January 19, 2009 this seems to have fixed itself.............although i messes with the trunk wires none of them looked bad. i did howver put 60 hard miles on the car with a number of WOT blasts. it now seems to have cleaned itself out?............maybe something was sticking and my fast driving cleaned it up? for the life of me i cannot get the car engine to misfire again? Sounds great. Send me a picture. "byerjv@yahoo.com" I have a gold 1992 LS400. Picked it up last year in Florida with 58,000 miles. It was also garage kept. I had the timing belt changed, and filters and the fluids. People warned me about it because it must have been settng for a long time. But so far - no problems except a few weeks ago the transmission started jerking at between 45 and 55 mph. I did a fluid change, disconnected the battery to reset the computer and unwrapped the wiring harness in the trunk. So far the symptoms have disappeared.
