1991 Ls400 Quick Questions

Hey guys, got a few quick questions about some little mods I've been trying to work on.

#1 - My 91 LS's headlights are very dim. My fogs are much brighter than the headlights, which should not be happening. So after some research, I've decided to pick up a 6K HID kit from a local shop. However, they charge $1 per minute for installs and said it would take at least 1 hour, which is nearing the cost of the kit itself! So I thought I'd save some money and install them myself. I've looked at diagrams and pictures and everything, but I can't get the outside parking lights out. They seem to be stuck, and I don't want to break the clips by trying to force them out. So, any tricks to it? Anything? I have been pulling them out at a 90 degree angle and wiggling them but no luck. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

#2 - I have been in the market for some aftermarket subwoofers for my trunk and was wondering if I need to purchase a new head unit in order to install the new subs. Is it absolutely necessary, not needed at all, or is there an increase in performance? Once again, any help appreciated.

#3 - My parking lights starting to collect water inside, about an inch so far. Only happens when I wash my car, not when it rains. Anybody had this happen? Also, after I remove and drain them, what would be a good sealant to keep the water out? I was thinking maybe like blobs of hot glue or clay maybe?

#4 - Opinions on a tinted windshield tinted 65% for both UV protection and a little extra privacy. And I do about 80% of my driving in the daytime.

Again, thanks for taking the time to look and any and all input, suggestions, and anything else would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem as #3 on my 91 LS400. Might have been from rain as well though. Had been a problem for a long time until I fixed it. I don't recall exactly how I removed the parking light (driver side), but here's what I do remember:

- I took the battery out, thinking it would give better access, etc., but it did not really help.

- the light kind of came out at an angle. There's like one screw, and then it is snapped in at the other end.

- I pried it and it popped out. I think it's pretty tough, and you should not be afraid to pry on it.

Regarding the water collection, I looked at the light. It has a vent, so it is already exposed to air going in and out. But the vent was high up, allowing water to collect. My solution, was to drill a hole at the lowest corner of the light (on the black plastic inside, of course), allowing water to drain. Solved the water collection problem perfectly, and since the light was already exposed to air, I don't think I caused any extra problems by drilling the hole. I couldn't figure out why the light was getting wet in the first place, but this solved it. No problems on the passenger side.

good luck

Ok, I was kinda thinking about drilling a hole, but I thought it might cause damage, but now with your suggestions and thinking about it, I'm just going to drill a small hole at the bottom, very easy and will definitely solve the problem once and for all. I'm just worried about it cracking or something. And I'm gonna mess with that parking light because I really want to install my HID's but don't want to snap my headlights in half. Thanks man.

#4 - Opinions on a tinted windshield tinted 65%

It's illegal!!

Yes, it is, but I'm not worried about it. It's also Illegal here in California to tint your driver and passenger windows but many people do, the result of getting caught is having to take it off and pay a maximum of a $10 fine, which is nothing. When I said opinions, I was referring to if 65% was too dark to see at night or if I could go darker.

first i whold suggestinstalling a 4300k or 5000k system. the amount of useable light in a 6k kit is very limited at best. there is a phillips screw on the top corner of your headlights which will allow you to remove the corner lights. the other bolts are 10mm.

I have done a lot of research on HIDs and wile 4300K and 5000K are going to be much brighter, I'm really looking for a bit of the blue tint you get with the 6000K+ HIDs. I know the lesser temps are brighter, but I want that blue look that newer luxury cars from BMW, Acura, and Lexus give off. And I found the phillips screw, but the lights are just stuck in there. And when you said "the other bolts" do you mean there is something more to take off than just that one small screw before the parking lights can come off?
