Very simplistically: Benefit of OD (in the ON position) is fuel economy. Its most beneficial at steady high speeds, as in highway/freeway driving. OD off position if you want a little more zip through traffic - just because tranny won't be in that tall OD gear when you need to call on it to move in a hurry.
