I could manage all right but my wife had a real problem. I took it in to the dealer and had it checked out. They explained that when you raise the lid and let go it should stay at that position. That was the only criteria. So I started a search for more powerful gas springs, what a pain. Persevering I found a great Canadian company "Lift Support Technologies". I called them and explained my problem and they apparently had a previous request for more powerful gas springs on a 04 LS430. I ordered a set and they arrived promptly. They were easy to install about 10 minutes. What a difference when you hit the button the trunk lid pops up about one inch higher than it did before. I then lift the lid, which is very light, and when it opens to approx one foot it opens the rest of the way by itself. It opens gently.
