4x4 Warning Light Continously Blinking

Hi All, Recently I had been on a long drive for a friends funeral and on return back, I had gone to the service station to have a wash, the car was jacked, on observation found little traces of oil leak on the 4x4 drive control system which is a small black box located on the front drive shaft. But I had anyway washed the car, two days later I happen to see few drops of oil on my garage, I jacked up the car. First disconnected the battery, removed the oil, and removed the 4x4 drive control system black box unit, Guess what I found lot of slime of water embedded below and the oil above, Anyway cleaned all that up, Happened to see the oil seal was detached and damaged. Purchased a new one, Fix it up and fit it back to its original form, oil pumped as required. Connected the battery, The warning lights are contniously blinking. I had a collegeau of mine to look at the unit while I started the car, the 4x4 drive control system works perfect, no fault in this function of engaging or disengaging. So I connected by personal OBD scan tool, The scan tool was not downloading anyfaults from the ECM , it says no faults. Lot of troubleshooting has been done, I just cant get the light blinking off. Drove to the dealer, After fews hours they said that the tool cannot locate any fault. So cannot erase any faults from the ECM ( WOW that is news, dealer cannot erase the fault). So I am now left with the annoying light blinking on the Instrument Cluster. Any Ideas appreiciated.

Hi Oldschlovo, thanks for the reply, ok here is what I did, I opened the unit comlpletely, It was not as complicated as I thought. The unit looks similar to an old grandfather clock. the said actuator was removed and looked and it is in perfect condition. The actuator has two ends which one has large gear tooth and other a small gear tooth. The gear tooth are absolutely fine. I refitted the old unit in similar sequence and did a table top test with some test switches. and the it the 4x4 engage and non engage perfectly works. then I remounted on the vehicle and did the test, This time I went to some deep 4x4 ride on rough sand and had the 4x4 engage, it did perfectly well pulling the vehicle out of 1-1/2 feet dirt, perfectly well. I disengaged the switch, the light keeps blinking continously regardly of any engagement. I just cant figure out where the fault code could lie in the ecm, if the ecm is unable to generate the error code. Now I plan to take my friend vehicle unit swap the unit to check if the light still blinks, if it is, then it is confirmed the unit is not faulty, but something else is trigerring the alarm. Any thoughts from your end....cheers

INSPECT H4 (Differential lock ”FREE”) ⇔ H4 (Differential

lock ”LOCK”) SHIFT

(a) Start the engine, and the differential lock switch is in

”OFF” position.

(B) Operate the transfer shift lever to ”H4” position.

© Check that the center diff. lock indicator light comes on after

pressing the differential lock switch for 2 seconds.

2. INSPECT L4 (Differential lock ”FREE”) ⇔ L4 (Differential

lock ”LOCK”) SHIFT

(a) Start the engine, and differential lock switch is in ”OFF”

position.

(B) Operate the transfer shift lever to ”L4” position.

© Check that the center diff. lock indicator light comes on after

pressing the differential lock switch for 2 seconds.

3. INSPECT CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SWITCH

CONTINUITY

(a) Remove the instrument panel finish lower panel sub−

assy.

(B) Remove the differential lock switch from the instrument

panel finish lower sub−assy.

© Inspect the continuity between the each terminal.

Switch position Tester connection Specified condition

OFF +B (3) ⇔ GND (4) No continuity

Hold ON +B (3) ⇔ GND (4) Continuity

4. INSPECT ACTUATOR

NOTICE:

Do as inspect the actuator while overhauling the transfer

or as a unit.

(a) Turn the ignition switch OFF and set the parking brake.

(B) Using a rigid rack, jack up the vehicle so that the 4 wheels

do not touch on the ground.

© Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the front propeller

shaft free or lock when switching the center differential

lock.

Center differential lock switch Condition of front propeller shaft

Off

(center der. free) Possible to rotate

On

(center def. lock) Impossible to rotate

HINT:

When the transfer gear is off the position, shift fork of the

actuator could not operate.

When switching is impossible, jack down the vehicle to

move it back and forth, and then check it again.

(d) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(e) Check the operating sound produced by center differential

lock switch operation.

If the operating sound cannot be heard, check the four wheel

drive control ECU and the wire harness in the next step. When

the wire harness and four wheel drive control ECU is normal,

replace the actuator.

5. INSPECT FOUR WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL ECU

(a) Connect the wire harness side connector to the four

wheel drive control ECU and inspect wire harness side

connector from the back side, as shown.
