Help me choose which tire to go with.

I have checked discout tire and just tires stores.

I do not want to buy from online because i still have to pay $20 per tire to

put them on and balance them so it's not worth it in my opinion. Also s/h.

I might check firestone place too but not for their tires....for obvious reasons.

So far i have two options. I live in chicago area so snow and rain is a factor.

I am looking for quite, good comfort, good handling in wet, snow and dry.

Yokohama YK420

OR

Michelin Pilot XGT H4

http://discounttire.com/dtc/findTireDetail...CodeIndex=35845

Yokohama is according to opinions of people on epinions.com quiter, good ride comfort but some

say it floats on highways and sidewall bend easily, good long wear

4 tires cost = $356

http://www.epinions.com/Yokohama_YK420_Pas...isplay_~reviews

Michelin is said it's stiffer side wall, good traction, low noice (notice yoko is better), good handling might be more siffer and compromise ride comfort for handling

4 tires cost = $512

Help me guys in the choice. I leaning towards yokos for softer ride and quiter but

i'm affraid like one guy said that on highway it floats instead of good handling.

In michelins i get good handling but I am affraid of stiff ride, noisy tires.

WHAT YOU GUYS THINK ?

I am not a fan of the Yokahomas. I've had them on my LS for two years now. Not sure which model of Yokos. I have not pleased with them at all. They have terrible traction on wet roads and they appear to be dry rotting. They also seem to be getting louder as they wear. They were installed by the dealer when I bought the car and have never been pleased with them.

I have been researching Toyos Proxes tires as they were recommended to me by a local tire dealer. He said he could put 4 on for a drive out price of $359. I'm not familiar with them but I am leaning towards giving them a shot.

Sebastor,

I have YK420's on my 99LS. They're pretty quiet, a little floaty. I don't think they handle all that great - but probably average.

I just don't know about the "wear" factor. I don't think they came with the car. I now have 59K miles and the tires have 4/32" left - nearly gone.

If they did come with LS then the wear is great, otherwise, they probably have about 30K or LESS miles on them.

Nothing is the "best" - everything is a compromise. That Yoko is a small coupe tire, not designed for cars like ours.

Today I had a set of Michelin XGT-H4's in the 215-65/15 size installed to replace the Bridgestone RE930i's, and they are far quieter, steer better, at a small cost in ride. You get what you pay for. Costco took the Bridgestones back at what I paid for them - excellent service - and let me move up to the Michelins for a lot less than I figured.

I haven't found a tire manufacturer yet that says their tires are noisy, or wear quickly, or ride hard, or have poor traction in any weather. They all heap the praises on their product, and hope we won't compare. The only way to know is to drive them.

Have Michelin Pilot XGT H4 on my 96LS. Drove six hours in the rain yesterday and doing between 70 to 85 mph without any problem except the highway troopers. They are more expense but they have given no problem so far. I have Kumho tires on my 91 Integra, I might just try them on my LS when the time come for a replacement.

Obviously you have not read reviews OF PEOPLE THAT RIDE ON THOSE.....THE CUSTOMERS....

US...PEOPLE WHO DRIVE ON THOSE not manufactures, cause otherwise you would not write what you wrote. I even included link for you. Other thing i just spent 3 days doing research on Michelin and XGT tire as well. PEACE OF !Removed!. Don't buy those tires. Soft sidewall will give heavy cars like ours 5000lbs + balloon like ride, not good handling..as to compromise read all 72 reviews of people for those YOKO's and then comment on YOKO.

Michelin's are overprised namebrand tires that don't hold up to it's japanees competiton.

Well i guess japanees even perfected that aspect of technology. Honestly guys read all 72 reviews of people who own them and compare that to XGT reviews and you will know what's up.

In those 72 reviews is 4 i think lexus reviews.

If any tire is soft and balloon like IT'S MICHELIN. Dunlop P5000 is actually little better but people can't stand road noice and Yokos are quite. Also they look sharp as hell.

Other thing I learned that 205 are definitly too nearrow tires for ls400. That was design mistake or just lexus being cheap in first 2 years of production. Notice any 93+ LS has 225 tires as stock. Notice also Q45 infinity has 225. 225 is perfect width for that car on stock 15" rims. 225-60-15.

However if you change rims then it's a different story.

Guys as standoffish I am in this response I'm trying to relay 3 days of heavy research to you guys.

Don't go with any YOKO, but defenitly this one is a WINNER. JUST READ REVIEWS...THAT'S ALL I'M SAYING.

I stopped by Costco tire yesterday just to look at tires. After looking at the Michilens, I looked at the BF Goodrich Touring "V" tires. $86 each including mount and balance LT warrenty/rotations and such. Nice fat looking with good tread. I've had BFG before and liked them except that they wore out quickly. The Michilens were like $146 each. I was just looking because I like tires.

Well you don't sound too standoffish to me Sebastor.

I am well aware that there are all sorts of reports written by owners of the tires on TireRack. They make some interesting reading. They are also quite contradictory, and the best one can do is find a "trend".

Some Michelins are a bit squishy. Not the Pilots though. I have XGT H4's on my 94 Camaro. (yes, yes, I am prepared for all the slagging for owning that car along with the Lexus, and I can handle it) I had XGT Z4's on the Camaro before, and the ride was too rough. Michelin is also expensive.

I read all kinds of reports on the Bridgestones, but what I found in terms of steering response (squishy) and road noise (high pitched whine) was not mentioned. Turned out I just didn't like them. Maybe the RE950's are better. Bridgestones look good, but that is not so important to me.

The H4's are outstanding in the dry and wet, and we get a lot of wet where I live. They are quiet, and ride well. The ones I bought today are my fourth set, on as many cars. Other Michelins I will never buy again, but these ones are good. Keep in mind that some Michelins are made in Japan.

Buy the Yokos. Let us know how they are. But you have been asking for opinions from this board for over two weeks I think, and you have got them. Take them and do as you will. Just calm down a bit, eh?

Vbdenny, I had Goodrich tires on a 427 Cobra replica I built a few years back ( I used a 460 Ford in that one....) and they were great. Excellent all round tire, and like you say, a good price.
