Dies When Cranked

Recommended Posts

It might be the idle control. My girlfriend's Mustang had the same problem... started, and when it got to low RPM's it died. just an idea.

how would i check the idle control?

I'm not sure.. I'm no mechanic. My girlfriend just turned hers into a shop. Hopefully one of the more experted users will log on and answer your question. :P

Is it choking/hesitating while idling or something else? Check your battery terminals and see if they're clean.

You don't want to buy a brand new gauge cluster or Climate Control unit. Lexus will charge you an arm and a leg. Search the forum for Gauge Clusters and Climate control. You'll find a number of CA based shops that will replace the bulbs and clean the terminals.

it revs then it chokes, even if i hold the gas pedal it sits at 200 rpm and when i release the pedal it dies totaly.i dont want to have to take out my cluster anhd wait for it to be sent back,id rather buy a remanufactured unit so i can drive the car while im waiting for it

Can't tell you exactly what's wrong with your engine without seeing it in person, but sounds very close to you're having a fuel or an air mixture issue. Any change the fuel injectors have been replaced in the past? A lot of people have added 87 Grade Fuel to these cars causing the injectors to be clogged.

Don't know where you can get a reman'd lexus cluster/console. Dealers, Ebay or the junk yards would be my guess. If you do change your mind about getting the cluster or the climate control done, the refurbishing companies usually take a couple of days or maximum 2 weeks. Just monitor your fuel consumption since you won't know what's left in your tank.

running lean, no. you'll probably have to do an EGR clean to solve that; I take it your check engine light is probably on? You have a clog somewhere. Do you have a reliable mechanic to go to?

check engine light is on,but the only two codes that come up,are for the main left and right o2 sensors, and one that says it is running lean, which the lexus mechanic told me is prolly caused by the bad o2 sensors.how much does an egr clean cost?how hard is it to do?

I think we've talked about other places where you can buy the o2 sensors cheaper in a different Post. Replacing the sensors will control the flow of exhaust air, but it's running lean because there's a bit of hesitation up stream. I don't know whether you're doing this through the dealer or is the mechanic working for you. If the Lex-Tech is working for you expect to pay somewhere around $2-300 depending on how much carbon is built-up in the pipes and chamber. it's a 2-3hr job, and on the books it's a 3-4hr job. The dealer will charge you a lot @ $109 or whatever they're charging today.

ive actualy found a mechanic who is much cheaper then anyone else, he owns two sc400s,and apparently loves working on them, as he is doing it all at cost,so i just need to get the parts as cheap as possible, cause he only orders from the dealer, but he will use any parts i bring him, and as he rebuilt his whole engine and added a supercharger,i think he should be able to do the egr job

If you're stalling right after startup and you're getting lean mix codes, then an intake leak could be your problem. It could also be the cold start injector. When starting the car, the ECM is in an open loop mode where there is no input from the o2 sensors. To go into a closed loop mode where the o2 sensors feedback to the ECM to start leaning out the mixture and go into a long term fuel trim, the engine has to be warmed up and requires signals from the o2 sensors. If you can't keep the engine running long enough to warm it up or if the senors are malfunctioning, the ECM will not go into LT trim. Have your mechanic check the csi and sensor readings and the ECM fuel trims.
