harperc Posted April 24, 2008 Share Posted April 24, 2008 I have just begun experiencing a mild sputtering when I accelerate in 2nd and 3rd gear. I cleaned the MAF, but it didn't seem to help. I have been thinking maybe a problem with the fuel filter or fuel pump. (There are no check engine lights.) Does anyone know & if so, is it an easy fix? Appreciate any help. "sputtering" is a pretty generic term, and can be caused by alot of different issues ranging from a bad spark plug, bad coil, bad fuel injector seal, air blockage, water in the fuel tank or bad gas, the list could on. I would take it in and have it profesionally diagnosed by mechanic. An ODB II scanner with datalogging and freeze frame can capture the event as it's happening, and they should be able to track the issue down quickly. I've been leaning in that direction, but wanted to see if someone else may have had this experience as well & what the turn out was. UPDATE: I held out a couple weeks and the check engine light came on; got it looked at & realized that it was a misfire on the #5 cylinder. I had gotten a tune up not too long ago, so I'm pretty sure now that it is the coil for that cylinder. Not sure if the spark plug was the origin of the problem or if it was the coil, but I replaced the platinum spark plugs with iridium plugs (on top of the wire & coil) and it rides like it is new again!
