SKperformance Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 anyone ever have to replace a bearing on the power steering pump or a pump on one at all? mainly the 94 and up ones as the previous 92-93 are probably different it seems that the last pulley that is way in the back of the engien bay is makeing a horrid noise it has its own belt from the crank shaft and it is spinning and grinding at the same time i also noticed that there aer slight metal shavings so i am guessing the bearing is worn and causing the pulley wheel to rub on the engine i was going to cut off the belt but then my coolant would not flrw properly not too bad since it is a straight highway drive home but did not want to risk it so i called lexus and after a while called me back to say there is no flatbeds availabe until 8am this is at midnight so i had to sleep over and the tow came this morning to take the car back to my house as the dealer is closed, since that is where they normally drive the car 2 but since it is a show car and a long weekend they dropped it off at home first time my car has ever broken and needed a tow ever. it still drives except for the racket it makes and i didn't want to drive it home just to hear bang as the puley lets go spraying my alternator with coolant and frying it then the pulley damaging the crank and the hood just to save a few buck and hassel what a night anyway anyone else had a pump go bad or the bearing and if so got ideas on pricing as i never heard of one being replaced i think i am going to pay for this damn thing being variable assist on the steering and for it running the fan also
bbsal Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 sounds to me like the bearings inside the pully is the problem.isnt there a nut to just take off the pully and replace it?i had this same exact problem with a ford taures and had metal shavings everywere and sounded like hell but just went to the dealer and bought a new pulley and poped it on and was fine. when i pulled off the old pully it was scraped up and killed on the inside! im not sure if there is a nut in the middle to take it off or not but i would think so!check it and see and also see if they sell the pulley.hope this helps because that sucks having to get it towed and all! if the pully dont come off and you have to buy a new pump i imagine you would only be able to take it out by underneath the car.couple bolts and lines i would think!
SKperformance Posted September 2, 2003 Author Posted September 2, 2003 yah there is a nut on the pulley but i am wondering if anyone elses es 300 has had a pulley or power steering pump go bad
SKperformance Posted September 6, 2003 Author Posted September 6, 2003 well it seems that the bearings are gone on my pump i got under it and took the belt off and started the car and omg it was so quiet again and i was thinking for the last year or so i needed to get my valves adjusted but it seems tehy are perfectly in spec by it having no noise well atleast something good came of this it seems the dust cover on the bearings behind the pully had moved away from the pump so dirt and water got inside it so over the past year or so it has gotten progressivly worse the race that holds the ball bearings was damaged i am guessing from wear of the bearings getting small as they had no grease in there anymore and started to bind on the pump and the race could no longer hold the ball bearings at an equal distance apart thus causing it to bind and shave the metal apart unfortunatly there is no kit from lexus to rebuild the pump although the manual shows a full breakdown of all internal parts for disassembly and repair i hate to buy a new pump for $470 when all i need is a $2 bearing and race to support the pulley oh well it could have been worse and cost alot more i asked the dealer and he said he has never changed on on an es only the 400 engines on thels and such just my luck
bbsal Posted September 7, 2003 Posted September 7, 2003 yea that sucks!at least you know how to fix it!maybe buying one from a junk yard and taking the bearings out of that one might work?then again it might hapen again if you do that so maybe your better off getting it new!good luck either way!
amf1932 Posted September 7, 2003 Posted September 7, 2003 Yeah.....That's the name of the game today! Years ago you could get the simplest of parts from dealers, whether it was brushes for a starter motor or bearings for an alternator, etc, etc. It's the same thing with electronic parts in any field. The attitude today is, just throw them out and replace the whole thing. Rebuilding components is a thing of the past because labor costs are so high. I think it stinks....give me the good old days!
