What To Look For In An Obd-ii Cable?

I want to get an OBD-II cable to hook up to laptop via RS232 serial port. What specific things do I need to look at to ensure the cable will work for my 97 ES300? Thanks.

obd is the protocol all cars have the same plug and use the same error codes that are retrieved by the same readers.

Only difference is that some will show actual sensor readings .
