Oil Consumption

My ES 300 burns about a quart of oil every 500 highway miles (ie, speeds of 65-75 mph). However, around town I can go 1000 miles and barely see any sign of consumption. I know there is blow by in one cylinder and a 'sludge' problem. I was just wondering if I can pass off the low oil consumption to the lower rpms or if some other factor might be involved.

Sure.....higher RPM's WILL burn more oil especially if your engine is not in top condition(rings, valve guides, etc.) Check to see that your PCV valve is operating correctly.

Change that & doa compression / leak-down test on a warm engine. That'll tell you the condition of the rings.

You could just have a quickly leaking rear valve cover gasket.
