93 Ls 400 Exhaust Problem

All. Need help... Went for a state inspection and got it rejected because he told there is some exhaust issue.. And he gave a Red R - which means cops will pull me over a lot..

Went to a local mechanic who is a specialist in exhaust and this is what he told..

There are two cracks.. One is in the large diameter tube.. which connects the exhaust to the manifold..

And another crack in the head of Y tube.. So he suggested he will weld the joints after cutting them. I can descibe the second problem better If I can see a diagram of the exhaust..

Cost - $200 for parts - OEM

Work - $325

Pls. give some expert advice - Thanks..

The tube that has a crack is the one from intake to manifold. They call it an E tube.

I believe that is the part referred to as an EGR tube as seen near bottom on page EG-84 in the attachment below. Seems like I paid over $100 for the part at the dealer. I followed the instructions from a previous posting:

Replacement Info-

From Beneath the vehicle:

Remove the two 12 mm nuts from the rt. side of manifold where the EGR pipe connects.

Remove 12 mm bolt at the back of the block, visible by looking between the right

side of the transmission and the exhaust.

Above the vehicle:

Remove two 12 mm bolts at the top of the pipe assembly and slowly slide the assembly

out by tilting it to the right.

Reverse procedure to install new part.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: The above is paraphrased from Sooners instructions below:

"there is 2 12 mm nuts on the right hand side manifold where the pipe connects to

remove those next there is a 12 mm bolt in the back of the block to see this look

between the tright sode of the trans and the exhaust remove this the go to the

top remove the 2 12 mm bolts for the top of the pipe thin slowly work the pipe out

tilting to the right."

Not much fun.The schematic showed only the 4 bolts referenced by Sooner in previous

post as accessible from top or bottom. The real world throws you a nasty curve on a

94 LS, The one he describes as in the back of the block will consume most of

your time. Above the passenger side cat you will find 2 studs which are easy to

remove from below, towards the firewall on top of the engine there are 2 bolts

which are a simple task , but the bolt on the back of the engine above the

transmission,( which did not appear on the schematic which I utilized as a

reference) that Sooner mentions is an absolute *BLEEP*, Very little room between

it and the firewall. I would by no means describe it's location as "visible".

3 bolts , 2 studs, 5 connection points total!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was able to remove mine, braze it and reinstall it in under 3 hrs total.

Here is how you do it:

Take a 12mm open/closed faced wrench and tie a 3'-4'string or wire to it. Trust me. Just do it. After you drop the wrench for the 4th time you will know why. You will have to do this blindly. with your hand follow the EGR pipe down until you feel the bracket that connects it to the engine. There is one screw. there is VERY little room and you'll have to reall squeeze to get there. now you know where it is. Now take the wrench to it. put the closed end of the wrench over the bolt and carefully remove your hand leaving the wrench over the bolt. You'll neeed some leverage to break it loose initially. I used another wrench to put the open end of one into the closed end of the other to get more leverage. once you break it loose it's just patience. This bolt alone will run about 30-45 minutes. Once it is off, disconnect the two ends and pull it out the top of the engine.

Thanks a lot LScott400 . I am comfortable with this change of replacing the EGR tube..

The other problem is what is really not settling in..

The mechanic also said there is a crack in the joint between the catalytic converters and the Y tube - The front exhaust pipe. His advice was to cut them and weld the catalytic converters with the front exhaust pipe.. All these incldued for $325 labor..

Seems to be a pretty well known muffler guy in the area as I noticed couple of 1970's cars bought in by senior citizens who told he is the best.. And couple of more people recommended him..

My only qn. is if he does what he said to the catalytic converters, (which as per him will come for 3-5 years) will I be risking replacing the converters anytime soon and basically spend a lot more ? - I mean, will this change cost me a lot more in a years time or is it just going to be the same.

His comment on this was unless you have to replace the catalytic converters it is not going to make any difference. And when I actually have to replace the catalytic converters it is anyways going to cost me quite a lot..

Hmm.. My Ls400 has just 104k on it.. Bought it two years back with 89k on it for $6800.. Hope it can last me a couple of more years as I love it too much to replace now.. -:(

Appreciate your inputs. I am planning to leave the car tomorrow to him.. Will have a chat with him again tomorrow... Pls. provide me your thoughts on my second issue..

Seems to me that the cost would be the same, so I would be comfortable with the weld job. The cats should be good for a loooong time yet.
