lenore Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 an ignition coil is a transformer that basically steps 12vdc (battery voltage) up to 12000 to 17000 volts voltage which is necessary to fire the spark plugs. The higher voltage will jump the gap on the spark plug electrode and ignite the fuel (Gasoline vapor) in the combustion chamber. Modern engines now have coils on every cylinder and spark plug eliminating spark plug wires. they are controlled by computer signals to fire the coils in the correct sequence.
