Drivers Side Window Only Rolls Down Halfway

Recently my drivers side window stoppped rolling down all of the way. I have ruled out the window regulator/motor being bad. I have looked around the door panel to see how to take it off but since i don't have a manual, I figured I would get another opinion before I broke anything.

Has anyone taken the door panel off and what is the best way to do so?

Well, seeing as I was searching on this topic I am going to be doing it tonight because a friend held the button down to long and it sounds like it broke off track, I'll let you know how it turns out, wish me luck.

It turns out that the metal rod right in the middle of the door contains the lifting mechanism. If you watch closley when rolling the window up and down you can see it move past each tiny whole up and down the rod. Now my problem is its not catching the window when going up, it only catches going down, and I can't figure out the problem. Its hard to see on the other side on the inside of the window. If anyone has any answers or ideas please let me know! thanks!

I think your problem is related to the white plastic (teflon) traveler that rides in

the metal guide (rod as u eluded to).

Here's basically what happens when u roll the window up and down:

There are two separate cables which wrap around a plastic capstan (pulley like

mechanism) in oppsite directions, then pass thru conduit guides and end up

being molded into the teflon traveler--ea cable has a small metallic cube attached

to its end. What probably happened is the cable that pulls the window down broke

loose from the traveler. This is what happened in my case.

There is a writeup.. either this or another lexus forum, can't remember.. which

outlines a fix by using epoxy (JB weld in this case) to fasten the cable back onto

the traveler but it is not an easy task. You have to remove the regulator, bend

the guide mechanism open to remove the traveler, clean and rough up the plastic

surfaces and do the mend job and hope it holds.

I elected to buy a new regulator, about $120 including shipping from Lansing Mi.,

rather than go thru the mend process.

Removing the regulator/motor was not that difficult: remove the three nuts that

hold the guide rod and three nuts that hold the motor end both attached to the

metal door panel. The reg/motor can then be worked free. Your new regulator,

if u chose to go that way, will come with a black plastic case covering the capstan

and wrapped cables. The black cover is for a very good reason. Do not remove

the cover.. its purpose is to hold the cables in their position so you can slide the

new capstan into the old motor housing without losing the tightly wrapped cable

which seem to be under tension. Just place the open end of the new capstan over

the square motor shaft and rotate the shaft to allow the capstan to slide into the

housing. Replace the new matallic cover over the capstan and u are ready to

reinstall the unit.

I had a bit of a problem with the reinstall. I could not for whatever reason get the

the horizontal guide attached to the window to mate with the teflon traveler...

I just couldn't seem to find the proper angle to slide it into the groove so iI finally

just filed the high points of the oblong teflon part of the traveler so I could tap it

into the guide. It did not affect the window operation even tho I remove a good bit

of plastic.

So far, over a week, the window has performed quite well.

The regulator I got for around $120 was for a '93 SC400 passenger side.

The parts dealer is Spartan Motor Mall located in Lansing MI

ph# 1 800 333 8696 or 1 800 998 7557.

I have bought several Lexus parts there and have been quite satisfied

with their pricing. Ask for Gary and tell him the guy from Pensacola who

just ordered the regulator a few weeks ago recommended your parts

outlet and hopefully he will treat you right re the cost of the part. Have

your VIN # handy and specify whether driver or passenger side. Delivery

for me was abt 4 days.

Whenever I price parts at the regional Lexus dealers in this area, the

parts costs are significantly higher. This place seems to be consistently

lower.

i take it a 93 sc 300 would have the same internal window components as a sc400? Please help as my passenger window goes down, but not up and i can still hear the motor working.....
