Power Steering Bubbles

Hi All,

Noticed a whirring noise under the hood when turning the streering wheel after a 40 minute trip at frreway speeds. Checking the power steering I found bubbles in the fluid.

The filter on the rack is clean (or was 9 months ago when I cleaned it)

I am guessing something is restricting the fluid flow and the pump is generating more pressure than what can be sent throught the hoses.

Any hint or ideas and how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Laserron

I had added power steering fluid last week, and also noticed some bubbles. I've also read that the LS400 has issues with the Power steering fluid leaking. Do you know how I could check if the fulid is leaking, or how much it should cost to get it fixed?

you may want to check your air control valve on the power steering pump. I replaced mine on my 1991 LS after a search through this forum and it cured the whining noise of the pump, the bubbles and I have not added power steering fluid for 2 months now.

Good Luck!

Jim

Sorry for being naive, but i'm not that good with car mechanics, how can I "check your air control valve on the power steering pump" I just recieved my Service Manual from ebay today, so if you could somewhat point me in the right direction, I could look up that info off the CD. Also, do you guys know how I could go about posting some of that info off the CD to this website? I also have other PDF's which might be important to other users, but I'm not sure if I have to get special right to post attachments over 100K? Thanks again for the info guys, this forum has been more than helpful.

Virtually all the air valves on 1st generation LS400's leak so they all need to be replaced.

The alternator has to come out to gain good access to the air valve so you can remove it http://www.saber.net/~monarch/airvalvea.jpg and that means the radiator has to come out so you will have good access to the alternator. However, I've heard some owners who are contortionists have gotten the air valve out without removing the alternator or radiator. This thread provides more info:
