$300 (plus) To Fix A Hood Release?

I have a 1 gen GS and I have been having problems closing the hood, the mechanic says the parts them elves aren't expensive but to rethread the release cable (a 3 hour job) is where the expense is. Is this something someone not that mechanically inclined (me) can do on my own? Looking for advice please I can live with paying over $300 for a fuel pump or something but not to open and close my hood!
