  1. I have this as well, along with many other problems...
  2. Sorry, So. Cal. That's still too much money! There are definitely worse engines to change. That is what I'd do. See if you have any independent Lexus or Toyota repair shops in your area. Any shop that works on Toyota should have no problem changing a Lexus engine, they're the same thing. I personally probably would stay away from "General" independent shops that work on ALL brands of cars. Not saying they couldn't do a good job, just better to have someone who sticks with a particular brand. Stay in So. Cal. way too hot here... Anyway, thanks so much for the help. I spoke to a dealer alternative Lexus repair shop who told me they have good success with JDM motors. He said that he could install one with less than 60K miles on it, including labor and 12 month p/l warranty for $3,000. Thoughts? Any experience with these Japanese replacements? Also, any suggestions on what I should have him replace once the motor is out. timing belt? anything else, and for how much? Sorry for all the questions, but you're a great help so I thought I'd keep pushing you... Thanks!
  3. On a related subject of While-The Mechanic-Is At It... I say mechanic, because I am a beginner. My 99 Rx300 blew a rod through the oil pan, so the engine is toast. Initially I thought it was time to look for a new car, but a dealer alternative repair shop said he could put in a JDM motor (under 60K miles) with labor and a 12 month parts/labor warranty included for $3,000. First off, any thoughts on this? Second, other than timing belt, what "while you're at its" should I replace? Can you give me a sense of the approximate cost? I really appreciate your input. Thanks for all the help! -Drew
  4. Well let me know if you're in Austin! If not, should I just call around and ask "how much would you charge to replace a motor on a Rx300?" To be fair, the first repair shop's price included changing belts etc that were easily accessible when the motor was out.
  5. Hi everyone, So I blew a rod straight through the oil pan on my 1999 RX-300. The motor, with only 143K miles, is dead. The dealer alternative Lexus repair shop in Austin (has good reputation) sourced a used long block engine with under 60K miles for around $2,000. However, they say the labor would be $3,000, which my uncle the car expert says is outrageous. So most likely the plan is to scrap the car and move on, but I'd appreciate your second opinions. While you're at it, what do you think about a Lexus certified used 2008 Rx-350 with about 35K miles for around $30K? will it make it past 143K miles ;) Thanks for the help! -Drew
  6. Can the oil pan on my 1999 Rx-300 2WD be removed while the engine is in the car? I likely ran out of oil and got the oil light, but engine may be cooked, as it knocks and barely starts. Wondering if by removing oil pan, I can examine if bearing materials were transferred onto the crank shaft journals. My uncle says this is a long shot, but if the oil pan is easy for a mechanic to remove, I may instruct him to do so. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! -Drew
  7. Thanks, Jeff. I hope to look into this soon. Stay tuned...
  8. Hello, I have a 1999 RX300 and have been hearing a grinding noise coming from under the "dash" on the passenger side. It's really much closer to the floor though on the center console side. I have removed two plastic panels and I think I have isolated the grinding noise to what looks like a motor near these very hot metal rods. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about here? Without being able to identify my problem, it's hard to search for a solution. Any help is appreciated. Also, A/C is working fine but I'm hearing an annoying sound whenever it is on. Do I need to lubricate or replace a belt or something? Don't know if it could be related to above problem, but and advice on this would be welcome too. Thanks for your help. -Drew
  9. Please send me the manuals too. Thanks so much! This is my email address.
  10. I thought I read that someone essentially installed an A-B switch to the radio's CD input. One position plays the CD changer, the other plays the IPOD. Has anyone considered this or have any idea what type of connectors would be needed? Thanks, Drew
  11. Could you please send me the pictures of your install as well? Thanks for your help! zerdecki AT hotmail.com -Drew
  12. If they are still available, could you send me a copy of the wiring scematics for the audio system? Thanks! zerdecki "at" hotmail.com -Drew
  13. Yep-- Sewell. Do you think they read the bullitens. I htink it is dangerous for them to have no idea what problems people are mentioning, especially for a brake problem for which there are reports about. We should do something about Sewel. One doesnt pay this kind of money for their kind of service. Contact me if you have any more dirt on Sewel. Thanks. zerdecki@hotmail.com What dealership did you take it to in Ft. Worth? Sewell? If so, we have had issues with them as well. There were multiple TSBs out on our car about some problems we were having and they acted as though I was the only one having the issue. Won't go back to them again. I am now a Park Place Grapevine fan. Their dealership is like a resort!! ←
  14. Yes, my family experienced the brake booster problem with our Canadian monster (2004 Rx330) as well. We got stuck in Rolla, MO on the way to St Louis for X-mas. Of course when it happened before in Fort Worth, the guy had no idea what the problem was from our explanation. We will now work on a way to get Lexus to ship our car back to us in Texas. Should be fun. They should also give me a free DVD update to the Nav!!! Drew
  15. I have seen a lot of parking break bypass mods for othger Lexus models, but not for the Rx. I doubt that the bypass modification for one car model will work on another. Does one exist for the Rx330? Thanks for the info! drew
